挨闷棍

挨闷棍:

Literally means:

get a staggering blow with a cudgel; experience an unexpected setback.

Actually means:

Robbers often use a wood stick to hit somebody from behind and take away the victim's belongings when he passes out.

This phrase metaphorically means being attacked unexpectedly or receiving a sudden blow.

It refers both to an unexpected physical attack and to a blow or setback hitting somebody unexpectedly in his life, study or work.

It may also mean that somebody suddenly comes across a difficulty that is hard to overcome.

In the latter sense, it generally implies that someone hears bad news or confronts unfavorable situation, which may cause him mental anguish.
