吃亏 means incurring or suffering a loss.
This phrase means since no one is able to be the winner in every front, some minor loss once in a while should not be taken as a big deal. It also means that true fortune only favors those who are no afraid of being at disadvantage. To be in a disadvantageous position often means loss at the start.
