白 and 白白 both are Modal Adverbs (情态副词):
白 and 白白 both are Adverbs, which means [in vain; for nothing].
白 has three meanings and is generally used with monosyllabic verbs or monosyllabic verbs with the auxiliary words, complement or object. 地 could not be added in any case.
白白 cannot be used as in entry 2 of 白, but it's the same as 白 used in the cases of entries 1 and 3, but must be used to modify disyllabic or polysyllabic words or phrases. 白白 can take 地 after it.
It is obvious that 白吃, but not 白白吃, or 白白吃了. Yet one may say 白白吃了人家的东西，白白喝了人家的酒，白白赔上两天时间, etc. What follows 白白 must at least be a monosyllabic verb plus auxiliary word or complement plus object, etc. to form a phrase.
