撮合山

撮合山:

Literally means:

matchmaker.

Actually means:

It refers to a matchmaker, a person who brings or tries to bring men and women into marriage.

In the past, a couple got married through a matchmaker instead of deciding by themselves.

说合 is also expressed as 撮合 which means bringing two parties usually a man and a woman together.

Professional matchmakers are eloquent. People exaggerate their eloquence by saying figuratively that they can bring two mountains together by words; hence the expression cuo he shan.

撮合山指媒人，即介绍婚姻的人。从前男女结婚往往不是双方自己决定的，而是通过媒人从中说合的（叫做撮合，撮指设法聚拢）。

职业媒人嘴巴很会说话，人家形容他们说话的本事大到可以把两座山说到一起，于是有了“撮合山”这个称呼。
