Literally means:

a true gentleman dies for an understanding friend, as a woman beautifies herself for one who dotes on her

Actually means:

士, a knowledgeable person, refers to man in gen eral. 知己 means knowing and trusting oneself. 容 means beautifying.

This idiom means a man is ready to do everything for an understanding friend, even sacrifice his life: a woman beautifies all out to do things for those who appreciate and trust us.

In other words, you should be kind to and trust others if you expect them to serve your needs.

士，读书人，泛指男人；知己，了解自己，信任自己；容，打扮。

士为知己者死，女为悦己者容，男人可以为赏识和信任自己的人做任何事情，甚至献出生命；女子为喜欢自己的人打扮。
