Literally means:
eight-part essay or tone; stereotyped writing or speech.
Actually means:
八股 is the short form of eight-part essay. During Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, those who took part in civilian selection test should finish an essay on a set topic, following a set format and word limit.
The essay is divided into eight parts, thus getting the name eight-part essay. This phrase suggests that the essay lacks substance or has no creativity just like a rigid eight-part essay. It also refers to anything that is stereotyped or routine. It carries a derogatory sense.
