Now, it refers to people or group (usually wealthy or powerful) supporting someone or something at the back. Since the backstage bosses hide in the dark, they impress others as elusive and mysterious.

原先指戏班子的老板（演出时往往在舞台后部监督或指挥），现在指不公开露面，只躲在背后操纵或支持某人或某事的人或者集团（通常是有经济实力或权力的人物或集团）。由于后台老板都是隐蔽的，所以有令人难以捉摸的神秘感。
