I'm not a teacher, but I had a class with my own instructor, where she taught me to think of 比较 in terms of "relatively".
Given that in mind, I would think this phrase would translate to "relatively know something more" about something.

You can only say that 比较了解某地。
认识 is an answer to a Y/N question; you can either 认识 or 不认识。了解 can have different levels, like 认识但不了解（can recognize sb. but do not know his name, age, address, etc.), 了解一点点（know a little about sb.), 非常了解（know very well）。
