上

上：可以是名词( on ; last; above），也可以是动词( to go up; to attend class or university)

1, 上 as Noun, express the location, as the location word

Location words are words denoting directions or locations. Location words in Chinese include the following:

东 / 西 / 南 / 北 / 前 / 后 / 左 / 右 / 上 / 下 / 里 / 外+边 （biān ）

As a noun, a location word may be used as the subject, object, attributive or the center-word, For example, 

1) 上边有个咖啡馆。

2) 商场上边是一个健身房。

When a location word is used as an attributive, a “的” is added after it. For example ：

上边的行李/ 上边的东西

When a location word is used as the center-word, “的” is mostly not added. For example ：

桌子上边/ 地上

A：我的汉语书在哪儿？A: Where is my Chinese book?

B：我的汉语书在桌子上边（ 面）。 B: My Chinese book is on the table.

2, 上 as Verb, showing the direction

他上来了。(The speaker is already up there and 他 is coming up towards the speaker)

他们上楼来了。( The speaker is downstairs)

我们爬上山去了。( 说话人在山下)
