I teach 6years old kid and I use easy steps to Chinese 轻松学中文 book combinate with YCT book.. The kid is very satisfied with this book, especially because it has a lot of pictures. Both books are in English

I am more familiar with Chinese Made Easy. I would say to focus on pronunciation more than Pinyin. It would be helpful if you speak Japanese and can start from similar Hanji and Chinese characters. 妈妈=母亲=お母さん。
