Which HSK v3 levels are needed for university study in China

HSK

Hello all,

I am a university professor (with a PhD) in the USA and I am wondering what level of the HSK v3 (2021) is needed to be able to be a master's or doctoral student in China in a technical field (computer science). I have lectured at universities in China in English, and I would like to be able to teach and learn my subject in Mandarin and eventually Cantonese as well.

Can anyone help me find information related to the HSK v3 levels needed? Everything I see online either specifies HSK v2 or does not list which version of the HSK it is using. (I am seeing levels 5-8 as a range, but I think those are from HSK v2.)

Thank you!

What Are Good HSK Levels and Scores for Chinese Universities?
First, we’ll explain what HSK level and score are considered good or adequate to attend a degree program in China.

Simply put, any HSK level/score that gets you into the school you wish to attend is good. That is to say, a good HSK level/score can be considered anything equal to or higher than the minimum required HSK level/score for your program. If you’re applying to more than one school, however, a good level/score will be one that can get you into all of your programs, that is, the highest minimum HSK level/score among your programs. (We’ll get to the details in a minute)

As you can probably guess, minimum HSK requirements for Chinese universities can vary widely. Some schools require rather high HSK Level 6 (210/300), whereas others only require HSK Level 5 or HSK Level 4. Generally speaking, the more competitive a school is, the higher minimum HSK level/score it’ll require. (However, not all highly ranked universities in China maintain high HSK requirements for admission.)

So in the end, what HSK level and score will you need to attain? Read on to learn more about the various HSK requirements for universities in China and what they mean for you.

I think it depends on the schools you apply to.

This uni requires you to pass HSK level 4 with a score of 180. (When your major is involved with Chinese)

Maybe you can find more info on these two websites?

Good luck!

Firstly, thank you for your help! It looks like since the OUC.EDU.CN site has not been updated since 2018 that they are still basing everything on HSK 2.0.

Secondly, you're in my "neighbourhood" - I live near Dallas. Small world! (Yes, I know Austin is nowhere near Dallas, but at least we're both in Texas.)
