Most of the time it refer to how many times. Like: 我已經讀了兩遍
It usually goes with 下 趟 次 遍

there's something u may be confused with. its abt how to distinguish 动量补语 n object bc 动量补语 n object r both after verb.
for example, 三次 in 看了三次 is 动量补语. 三次 is used to describe 看. 看了三本 is not 动量补语, bc 三本 is used to describe a noun like 书. so its like the sentence 看了三本 omits 书 after it. so 三本 is object in this sentence
