I think before you choose materials for your students, should also think about their background. Are they totally new to Chinese language or they're actually from a chinese family and the parents speak chinese to them etc...

要看孩子的学习背景，可以拼音开始，4岁不要在写的方面要求太多，以听说为主，如果家庭中文背景很强，以识字阅读为主选书更好。
