What is the difference of 留念 and 纪念？

留念 (liú niàn):
This term is often used to describe the act of taking a photograph or memento to commemorate an event or a place, similar to saying "to take a souvenir" or "to take a memento" in English.

It implies capturing a moment or memory for personal enjoyment or remembrance, often associated with tourism or visiting significant places.

For example, if you take a photo in front of a famous landmark as a keepsake, you might say "我在这里留念" (wǒ zài zhèlǐ liú niàn) meaning "I'm taking a photo here as a keepsake."



纪念 (jì niàn):
This term refers to the act of commemorating or remembering something, often an event, person, or significant date, similar to saying "to commemorate" or "to memorialize" in English.

It carries a more solemn or serious connotation compared to 留念 and is often associated with paying tribute or respect to someone or something.

For example, if there's a ceremony or event to remember a historical figure or an important event, you might say "我们要纪念他的生日" (wǒmen yào jì niàn tā de shēng rì) meaning "We are going to commemorate his birthday."
