Hi Guys,

I have already learnt that 点(儿) means "a little" or “some".

Question 1. So, for example, the translation of "你要不要点儿咖啡?" into English would be "Do you want SOME coffee?" Is that right?

Question 2. How would you translate the following sentences:
你要买点儿什么?
你喝点儿什么?
你们想要点儿什么零食?
I read somewhere that 点儿 can be used to soften a question, but what does 点儿 mean here?

Question 3. Moreover, I have found some more examples with 吗 added in the end! 什么 and 吗?Never seen this structure before. So, how would you translate the following sentences into English (and how is it different from the examples in Question2) :
你想点儿什么吗?
你想吃点儿什么吗?
你喝点儿什么吗?

thanks

Question 1:
虽然“想”和“要”都可以翻译成英文的“want”但表达的程度还是有区别的。
• "想" 表示的是一种思考或想法,没有明确的行动计划或强烈的决心。
• "要" 语气更强烈,表示确定的意图、决心或需要。
根据你的问题,如果想表达英文“Do you want some coffee?”我建议还是用“想”比较好。这里面又涉及到另一个语法知识:“正反疑问句”或“......吗?”的结构来提问。所以“Do you want some coffee?”
Would you like to order some coffee?”
Question 2:
你想买(吃、喝、点、订、)点儿什么(东西、零食、小吃、饮料、礼品)?
“点儿”表示“少量”或“不多”的意思,表达的语气更委婉、客气,暗示可能只需要买少量东西。如果去掉“点儿”,就更直接,询问的是具体的购买内容,没有数量的暗示。
此外,如果直接问“什么”,则表示范围很广;“什么”后面加上“东西、零食、东西、零食、小吃、饮料、礼品”等就把问题的范围缩小,更具体一些。
Question 3:
加不加“吗”其实在意思上区别不大,只不过:
 你想喝点儿什么?更加直接,适合随意、熟悉的场合。
 你想喝点儿什么吗?语气更温和、客气,适合更礼貌的询问。

你想点儿什么吗?
This is not an athentic Chinese sentence. We will say "你想点什么吗?”, meaning "is there anything you would like to order?". There should be no "儿", and "点“ is a verb, meaning "to order".

"什么吗“ in above 3 sentences, "什么“ is not indcating a question, instead it means "anything or something", the function is "虚指“ in grammar. So they could be translated into:

你想吃点儿什么吗?Would you like anything to eat?
你喝点儿什么吗?Would you like anything to drink?

"点儿" here is to soften the tone.

Question 1. So, for example, the translation of "你要不要点儿咖啡?" into English would be "Do you want SOME coffee?" Is that right?

Two meanings of this sentence:
1. 你要不要 点咖啡?Do you want to order coffee (instead of sth. else)? While you speaking it, the tone stress on the word "点“。
2. 你要不要点儿咖啡?Local Chinese will not say sentence like this. If you want to say "Do you want a little bit of coffee?", we will say "你要不要来(一)点儿咖啡?“。“一” will be swallowed when speaking fast. And the tone stress is on the word "来“。

你要买点儿什么?
你喝点儿什么?
你们想要点儿什么零食?
I read somewhere that 点儿 can be used to soften a question, but what does 点儿 mean here?

This “点儿” could be saved without changing the meaning of the sentences, so the funtion is just to help to soften the tone.
