Literally means:

Ah Q is the main character in The True Story of Ah Q written by Lu Xun, he is often bullied by other people, but he cannot fight back.

Yet he tries to comfort himself by thinking of his defeats in terms of moral victories.

Actually means:

Ah Q metaphorically refers to a person who is humiliated, hurt or defeated comforts himself like Ah Q in order to get some mental compensations.

Derogatory, and sometimes used as a neutral phrase.

阿Q是鲁迅小说《阿Q正传》的主人公，他受人欺侮无力反抗。却又不敢正确对待这一情况，反而自我安慰，说自己是胜利者。
