走麦城:

Literally means:

walk to Mai city

Actually means:

In the Three Kingdoms Period of Chinese history, the renowned general Guan Yu lost a key battle own captured and executed by his enemies.

Since then, the phrase Zou Mai Cheng is used to refer to suffering a big loss or falling into an impasse meet one's Waterloo.

三国时代蜀国有名的将军关羽打败仗逃到麦城时被敌人抓到并被处死。

后来就用“走麦城”比喻失败或陷入绝境。
