谢天谢地

Literally means:

thank the sky, thank the earth

Actually means:

Thank God. Superstitious people believe that if one is without mishap and is free from any disease or disaster, that is because of the blessings of God or heaven.

So they tend to say "Thank God" to express their rejoice or comfort when they meet these situations: he himself or his relatives, escaping a disaster,or the person or thing they have been expecting showing up, or hoping to avoid a trouble. Commendatory.

感谢天地。迷信的人认为，一个人能够无病无灾，平安顺利都是天地神灵保佑的结果，所以应当感谢天地。

于是，碰到下面的情形时，便用“谢天谢地”来表示庆幸、感叹或安慰：自己或亲人躲过灾难，焦急等待的人物或事物终于出现，希望能避免不想遇到的麻烦。具有褒义色彩。
