Traditionally to invite two sets of theatric company and let them perform face to face on two opposit platforms at the same time is called "to put up a rivaling show".

It figuratively describes that both sides compete tit for tat, trying to beat each other. It can also refer to the action taken against someone or something. Derogatory.
