how to type pinyin and charactors at the same time?

when you use Chinese to type, you can press "Tab". It will show you pinyin

You could add pinyin - simplified or traditional, and also add Stroke or Sucheng (as charactors). When you get used to it, I think Pinyin would be good enough for most uses; Typing by charactors is rarely used only when we do not know how to spell it in pinyin.
