Students always find learning characters hard, and they don't want to put much effort. into practice. Is there any smart ways to teach them characters?

I am rather new to the Chinese language and I cannot say for other people but for me it's easier to memorize characters when I build some associations connected with their components (like the pronoun 你 is associated with a phrase "a little man under the roof" for me). Moreover, it's important for me to see where and how I could use the character I am learning in real speech patterns. And I also find numerous reviewing the already learned ones useful.

i think learning comes from within and one cannot force it one someone. though reward based training might help like how it becomes very easy to train a dog with treats
