Could anyone explain to me how to recognize if I see radical 日 (rì) or radical 曰 (yuē) in complex Chinese characters like in 是 or 更? (I know the difference for these two words but I am at a loss when I see the word that is not familiar to me yet. They look the same to me =()

Actually it's not that important to distinguish 日 and 曰, even for we Chinese. It's not used in Chinese speaking widely nowadays.
But we can see from the shape of the two characters, 日 is the narrow one and 曰 is the wide one.
We often say 曰 in ancient Chinese, such as 子曰 in 《论语》(The Analects of Confucius)means ‘Confucius said’.(In Chinese Confucius' name is 孔子, so here the 子 stands for Confucius; 曰 means to say something.)
In a word, if you want to speak Chinese or sometimes use the language to communicate or even for your work, it's not that important to distinguish the two characters. It's necessary for you to take a deep insight only if you do some deep study on Chinese literature.

Thank you very much for your reply. As far as I got it from your answer, 曰 is seldom used in modern Chinese and is somewhat archaic, so most of the time one deals with radical 日 when seeing it in complex characters. I was wondering about these two radicals because it helps me to memorize the word better if I analyze its structure and components.

日 looks taller, but 曰 looks shorter.

曰 is fatter and shorter,it means “to say”,so it is a big mouth under its sentence
日 is taller and thinner, means "the sun"

You need to look at the context. When looking at them seperately it's hard to tell the difference. But they often appear in different contexts. For yue, it does not appear in modern contexts and it always means say
