Answer
You and start with easy and useful short phrase rather than a whole sentence.
For example:
多少錢?

不懂
左轉
右轉
Build up the basics and then move on.

As a non native speaker who studied Chinese for more than fice years, I would recommend you to find a good teacher at first. It might be a better way yo study Chinese in the start of your way, I think.

You should start with Pinyin(pronouncation) if you are beginner. Try to remmember the Pinyin together with the 'meaning'. There is a series of Hanyu books (lvl 1 to 10) and you can use as studying material(also Youtube channels). And then you should start practicing basic stokes. While you're practicing, you should noticed the smimilar stokes. It'll be very helpful for you to remember the similar worlds with different meanings. Chinese worlds combine one to another and bocome new meaning. P.S , be careful with Pinyin.

I started with the hello chinese app, it's like duolingo but tailored for chinese. It teaches up to HSK4 material, but it does not teach every word to my knowledge. After that I'll read the HSK books, and make an ANKI deck (a flashcard program).

In ANKI you'll want a diversity of types of flashcards, ones where you have to match the picture to a word, multiple choice, cloze, etc.

Once you start a method of study, go through it until the end, as if you switch study methods and materials too often it may be bad for your learning. You don't want to be switching to a new material every time the material you're learning with gets hard.

Start with pinyin if you are beginner and do not know how to read any Chinese words.

You may also start by practicing some basic strokes for character writing.

First of all get a book, then there are so many videos online start with them and self learning. i think the most efficient way is self learning and frequent interaction with natives..
