Hello, everyone. I have just joined Cchatty. What course should I take to begin learning Chinese vocabulary and grammar? The HSK course seems to be mostly in Chinese characters.

The HSK textbooks are from elementary to advanced levels. It's better to find a teacher to help you, because you need to learn pinyin and Chinese characters to get started. Each textbook has an introductory course, and you need a teacher to help you learn, because some pinyin rules and pronunciations are difficult for biginners to learn by themselves.

You can start from anywhere, because our children also learn language from commonly used words in daily life. But for a foreigner, if you don't have the language environment, you need to learn pinyin. This is essential. Chinese is an extensive and profound language. You can't learn it just by taking a single course. First of all, the structure of Chinese is to learn pinyin first, then vocabulary, and then grammar. Only by learning pinyin can you pronounce. Combined with vocabulary and grammar, you can complete sentences. The specific content of learning needs to be formulated according to your goals. If you only need to travel, learning pinyin and basic sentences is enough. If you want to study work-related, you can choose business Chinese.
Step1 is to determine your goal to choose learning content (travel, work or studying abroad).
Step2 is to choose a teacher you like.
Step3 is to start your course (pinyin - vocabulary - grammar) revolves around your chosen goal.

So is there something on this website that will teach me pinyin? Or must I do that somewhere else on my own?

I rcommend the course book HSK 1. Many teachers provided free HSK 1 courses on Youtube, you can have a look. But before you start to learn HSK course, I think you should learn the pinyin systems first. The pinyin uses the alphabet syllabus to reffers how to read a word in chinese (it is like the IPA of english languages). You should learn it before you take a HSK 1 course. Hope you learn this language well

As a beginner of Chinese , the first step is learning pinyin and its tones. once you know the chinese pronauciation rules, you literally can articulate all the chinese marked by pinyin and tones. after that stage, it's time to learn basic collocations. Then you are able to make up simple sentences by using the vocabulary. Good luck!

Thanks for the general response, but my question was, "What course should I take here to begin learning basic Chinese and grammar?" I am looking for specifics, not generalities. For example, the HSK courses seem too advanced. Is there a beginner-level course? What single course do I start with on this website? That is my question. Is there one?

depend on your situation and learning goal, because HSK focus on the level exam, but it also cover pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar,if you just want to improve your spoken Chinese, you also can choose another textbook which emphasize on speaking practice.
