I agree that its good to use the online resources. You can find lots of support online.

But for beginners, its better to find a tutor to teach you pinyin, and to make sure you have the basic knowledge in Mandarin to do self studies. At least, in the beginning you need a native Mandarin speaker to tell if you can pronounce relatively correct when you see the pinyin.
Otherwise you never know how accurate your pronunction is, but keep practising the wrong sounds.

Then, you need to start to listen a lot and help your understanding, you may watch TV serials and movies.

You may also download some PDF and audio in this site, its so helpful.
