突然 (HSK 3), 忽然 (HSK 5) both are Adverbs of Time(时间副词)

 

Both 突然 and 忽然 are used to show something happens out of one's expectation, but they differ in parts of speech.

 

忽然 is an adverb and is only used as an Adverb

 

while 突然 can be used either as an Adjective or an Adverb, in addition to being used as an Adverb, it can also be used as an attribute, a predicate or a compliment.
