Definition
多, as an Interrogative Adverb (疑问副词), is placed before an adjective to ask a question about the degree. In the answer, the number is provided and the adjective is often not repeated.
Example
多大
多大 is used to ask about the area, volume and age.
1) When 多 + adjective serves as the predicate, it is often preceded by 有. eg, 多大 can be changed into 有多大. However, in the answer about age, one can only answer 我 18 rather than 我有18.
2) When 多大 is used to inquiring age, it is mainly used to ask children or to ask youngster by the senior. It can also be used by two persons in the same age group to ask each other's age. Except for children, one cannot inquire about the age of the who are older than him or her.
