Chinese New Year officially will be on 25 January 2020, and millions of people around the world will celebrate the festivities. Chinese New Year is also called the Spring Festival, the date of Chinese New is determined by the lunar calendar when there is a start of a new moon. Each year is named after one of the 12 animals in Chinese tradition, which feature in the Chinese zodiac. This 2020 year is the year of the Rat.

According to Chinese tradition, the order of the 12 signs of Chinese New Year was determined by Buddha. Upon the celebration of the Chinese New Year, all of the animals in the kingdom were invited, but only 12 animals attended. The first animal to reach was the intellectual Rat, who was aggressive enough to jump off the back of the hard-working Ox, and thus the first to arrive. The next to come was the Ox, followed by the charming and authoritative Tiger, and the detached Rabbit. The frank Dragon joined the others, as did the philosophical and wise Snake. The physically active Horse jogged in with his artistic and good friend Goat. The active Monkey and the honest Rooster arrived as well. The last to join the others was the Dog and Pig. According to the tradition, each animal acquired a year of its own, giving its characteristics and symbolic nature to those born in that animal’s year.
