Before we discuss all the titles of Chinese family members, we need to know that the Chinese people extremely value family and everything about family. They think that everyone belongs to his or her family. Family is a safe haven for everyone. Chinese people’s deep-rooted idea about family is the key reason why the structure of the title about Chinese family members is much more complicated than that of English-speaking countries.
For example, in the English world, the word “brother” means the elder or younger brother, it doesn’t distinguish between elder or younger brothers. But in China, there a word for each of the brothers, “哥哥” for the elder and “弟弟” for the younger. “哥哥” often shoulders more responsibilities in the house than the “弟弟”. In feudal times, only the eldest son (长子) is eligible to inherit the family property.
Key Characters in the Titles of Chinese Family Members
Male 男:
ɡōnɡ fù yé bà bó shū jiù fù ɡē dì xionɡ zǐ

Female 女:

堂, 表, 外 (TÁNG, BIǍO, WÀI)
The prefix characters “堂,” “表,” and “外” are added before certain titles to indicate whether a relative belongs to one’s father’s side or mother’s side. For example, if your uncle has a son who is older than you, you should call his son “堂兄” or “内表哥”; if he is younger than you, you should call him “堂弟” or “内表弟.” Similarly, if your mother’s siblings have a daughter who is old than you, you should call her “表姐” or “外表姐.”
"堂" refers to a "hall," where ancient Chinese people often held important events in the. It conveys a formal, solemn and official air. "外" means outside, which implies that the mother's relatives are not as important for this family as are father's relatives. "内表" and "外表" are used to refer to father's and mother's relatives respectively. However, "内" implies a closer relationship than "外".
