Cantonese Learning and Teaching

Two good beginning Cantonese books for English speakers.

I found these two books for learning Cantonese, and they are proving to be quite helpful and fun, even if they are limited in their scope.

Book 1 follows the story of a young man who has fallen in love with a girl from Hong Kong, but does not speak Cantonese, nor does her extended family speak English. This book takes the reader through some basic conversation items and situations that one would expect upon meeting your girlfriend's family. The author does a very good job of explaining the grammar points and making it all make sense.

I will admit that I came to this book already knowing some Cantonese and quite a bit of Mandarin, but I still feel that the book is quite accessible for someone with no exposure to either language (Cantonese or Mandarin) before reading the book.

The audio files are available online and are quite clear and easy to understand.

“Learn to Speak Cantonese 2”

Book 2 is a whimsical tale of a polar bear and his friend, a pomeranian (a type of small dog) as they travel to Hong Kong to live there for a year and promote green living. It gets a little preachy at times, but still covers the intermediate vocabulary and grammar quite well. This is written by the same author as the previous book, and her teaching style is quite lucid.
