Dividing-mark(隔音符号)
When a syllable beginning with a,o or e follows another syllable, it is desirable to use a dividing-mark(’) to clarify the boundary between the two syllables. e.g.

Tiān ān mén ( X ) → Tiān’ān mén 天安门 Tian An Men
wǎn ān ( X ) → wǎn’ān 晚安 good night
hǎi ōu ( X ) → hǎi’ōu 海鸥 sea mew; seagull
tiān é ( X ) → tiān ’é 天鹅 swan; cygnus
