er and the retroflex final（er 和 儿化韵）

Retroflex finals

First, put the tongue in the position fore, then when pronouncing er, slightly curl up the tongue-up. Try to pronounce the following:

ér tóng ( 儿童） children

ér zi （儿子） son

ěr jī （耳机） earphone

èr bǎi （二百） two hundred

er forms a retroflex-syllable in combination with other finals. In transcription, it is shown by adding an r to the original final. In written language, it is represented by a “儿” following the original character（sometimes it can be omitted）,e.g.

wán （玩）+ er（儿）→ wánr （玩儿） play

huà （画）+ er（儿）→ huàr （画儿） picture

nǎ （哪）+ er（儿）→ nǎr （哪儿） where
