The character「難/难」(nán) is the adjective of emotion and means "difficult" and "hard".
The adjective could be placed before the verb in order to refer to the unpleasant feeling at that moment, for example:
「難/难」+「看」(look ):bad look/ugly
「難/难」+「闻」(smell):bad smell
「難/难」+「吃」(eat/taste):bad taste
「難/难」+「喝」(drink):awful drink
「難/难」+「听」(hear/listen): unpleasant voice
The verbs「看」、「闻」、「吃」、「喝」、「听」 are neutral verbs, but when the adjective 「難/难」is placed in front of them, the verbs are with negative meaning.
